While returning from brunch on a Sunday afternoon, I spotted a Hadith mentioned on a billboard, above the Alamgir Welfare Trust building, on Alamgir Road, PECHS. The Hadith, a very prominent one quotes the Holy Prophet Muhammad (may Allah’s peace be on him) as:
The best among you is the one who learns to read the Qur’an and helps others to read it as well.
This brought forth a strange realistic thought to me at that very moment. Unfortunately, we have just kept ourselves to reading and reciting the Qur’an. The actual meaning of the Hadith was not just confined to “reading”. It originally meant studying. The true meaning, which has been misconstrued by many, is to understand the word of Allah, which has been sent down through the Holy Prophet (may Allah’s peace be on him). The Qur’an was sent down as a message from Allah, the message of peace and prosperity, a guiding light from The Creator, who only wishes the very best for His creation.
Like this, there are so many misconstrued and misunderstood Hadith and translations of various sayings and Ayahs of the Qur’an. It is important to keep the focus, understand each word properly by placing it in its true context, and then derive the message such that it makes not just sense, but enlightens the student. I call the reader a student, because s/he is studying, and learning, through inquisition and research.
We, as a majority, have stopped studying. It makes one feel that we have considered ourselves above the need to know. Alas! This has led to the state we are in. We are half baked in just about everything; otherwise we really would have been the best nation in the world. We would have been, a dream lost!
